Frequently Asked Questions

Voice & Claiming

I'm shouting "BOOM" but nothing happens

First, check the mic indicator on the game screen. If it says "Mic is OFF", tap the mic button in the bottom toolbar to enable it. If it's red and says "Say BOOM + your name!", the mic is on. Make sure to say "BOOM" followed by your first name (the exact name you entered during setup). Speak clearly and at a normal volume — no need to scream. If you're in a loud car, try speaking closer to the phone or your car's microphone.

The app said "Who said that? Say your name!"

DashDashBoom heard "BOOM" but couldn't match it to a player. This happens when the name is unclear or too quiet. When you hear this prompt, simply say your first name clearly within 3 seconds. Tip: say your name right after "BOOM" with no pause — like "BOOM Alex!" in one breath.

The wrong player got credit for my claim

DashDashBoom uses voice matching to figure out who said "BOOM." If two names sound similar, the app may pick the wrong one. The host (game owner) can fix this: tap Fix in the bottom toolbar, then Reassign to give the points to the right player. To avoid this, use distinct first names during setup — avoid nicknames that sound alike.

Can I tap to claim instead of using my voice?

Yes! Each player has a tap-to-claim button (the yellow hand icon next to their name on the game screen). This is great for loud environments, younger kids who have trouble with voice, or when the driver wants to claim without speaking.

Audio & Sound

I can't hear the host talking

Check these in order: 1) Make sure your phone is not on silent mode (flip the side switch). 2) Turn up the volume. 3) Check the speaker icon in the bottom toolbar — it should be green when audio is on. If it's gray, tap it to enable audio. 4) Make sure you have an internet connection — the host voice requires data to generate speech. If you're in a dead zone, the host will resume when signal returns.

Audio plays through my phone but not my car speakers

If your phone is connected via Bluetooth or cable but game audio only plays on the phone: 1) Make sure your car stereo is set to the Bluetooth/USB input source. 2) Try disconnecting and reconnecting Bluetooth. 3) Close and reopen DashDashBoom. Note: when connected to car Bluetooth, audio quality may sound slightly different (like a phone call) — this is normal because Bluetooth uses a hands-free audio profile when the microphone is active.

The host voice sounds low quality or robotic in the car

When your phone connects to a car via Bluetooth, iOS automatically switches from high-quality stereo (A2DP) to phone-call quality mono (HFP) because DashDashBoom needs the microphone for voice claims. This is a Bluetooth limitation, not a bug — every app that uses Bluetooth + microphone has this behavior. The audio is still clear and perfectly listenable.

Gameplay

My game froze or said "Connection lost"

DashDashBoom needs an internet connection during gameplay. If you drive through a dead zone, the game will pause and show "Connection lost." It will automatically reconnect when signal returns — your progress is saved on the server. If it doesn't reconnect after 30 seconds, try closing and reopening the app. Your game will still be there.

What's the difference between Team Up and Battle Royale?

Battle Royale is competitive — every player scores individually and there's a winner at the end. Team Up is collaborative — everyone works together toward a shared team score with a team goal. Team Up is great for younger kids (ages 5-8) who don't handle competition well, or for families who just want to have fun together without keeping individual score.

The targets are too hard (or too easy)

Target difficulty is based on your Audience setting. Kids mode gives easy, common targets (red cars, stop signs). Mixed adds medium-difficulty targets. Adults includes rare, hard-to-spot targets. If targets are timing out without being found, DashDashBoom automatically shifts to easier targets after 3 consecutive timeouts. Try adjusting your Audience setting before starting your next game.

I accidentally ended my game

DashDashBoom shows a confirmation dialog before ending a game ("Are you sure?"). If you confirmed by mistake, unfortunately the game cannot be resumed — but you can start a new one immediately with the same players and settings. Your stats and history from the ended game are still saved.

Permissions & Setup

DashDashBoom is asking for microphone and speech permissions

DashDashBoom needs two permissions to hear your voice claims: Microphone (to listen for "BOOM") and Speech Recognition (to understand what you said). Both are required for voice play. If you accidentally denied either one, go to iPhone Settings → DashDashBoom and enable Microphone and Speech Recognition. The app does not record or store any audio.

Why does DashDashBoom want my location?

Location is optional but makes the game much better. When enabled, the AI host knows where you are and makes commentary about your actual surroundings ("Great driving through Nashville!"). It also selects targets that match your terrain — you won't get "find a cow" in downtown Chicago. If you decline, the game still works fine, just without location-aware features.

How do I remove a player I added by mistake?

On the Add Players screen, swipe left on the player's name card to reveal the delete button, then tap it. You can add and remove players freely before starting the game.

Battery & Data

Will DashDashBoom drain my battery?

DashDashBoom uses the microphone, speaker, GPS, and screen continuously during gameplay — similar to using navigation + a phone call. For a typical 20-30 minute game, expect about 8-12% battery usage. We recommend plugging in your phone during longer road trips, especially if you're also using navigation.

How much cellular data does DashDashBoom use?

A typical 20-minute game uses roughly 15-25 MB of data, mostly for the AI host voice. This is less than streaming a single song. If you're worried about data on a long trip, connecting to a mobile hotspot or playing shorter games can help.
